Embracing Culinary Diversity: Why European BBQ Teams Should Compete in Chile

In just a few months, WBQA will host its next international championship, and we’ve noticed that European teams have been hesitant to register. We’ve been wondering what’s holding them back from participating in this exceptionally organized event in Chile, one of Latin America’s most stable and prosperous economies. Chile boasts a high-income economy and is renowned for its geographical diversity and natural wonders.

Being part of the WBQA family means that we want to learn from each other, so we have to change our mindset because there is much to learn from the Latin-Americans.
Wim Vink, CEO World Barbecue Association WBQA

Our Latin American friends have enthusiastically attended European-hosted championships, such as those in Belgium in 2022 and Germany last year. They are eager to learn from our barbecue techniques and competition styles. Similarly, European teams should embrace this opportunity to explore how meats are grilled in Latin America, understand their approach to side dishes, observe their fire management techniques, and experience how Latin Americans celebrate barbecue and their unique lifestyle.

However, several factors might be inhibiting this curiosity:

  • Fear: Concerns about safety in Chile.
  • Lack of Confidence: Uncertainty about the value of the trip.
  • Fixed Mindset: Belief that European barbecue techniques are superior.
  • Societal Pressures: Perceptions about the cost and worth of the trip.
  • Lack of Time: Balancing the championship with annual leave.
  • Overwhelming Information: The complexity of planning an international trip.
  • It’s time for European teams to embrace culinary exchange and global barbecue culture by joining the championship in Chile!

Fear: Is Chile Safe?

Chile is widely considered one of the safest countries in Latin America, with low crime rates, a stable political system, and strong social order. It is a secure choice for both residents and tourists.

Lack of Time: Is It Worth My Annual Leave?

Chile’s diverse landscapes offer something for every traveler, from arid deserts in the north to glacial lakes and rugged coastlines in the south. Its breathtaking scenery and pristine environments make it a top destination for adventure and tranquility.

Societal Pressure: Is a Trip to Chile Worth the Cost?

While Latin America faces internal challenges and modest growth, Europe is dealing with external trade pressures and strategic uncertainties. As travel costs rise for traditional European and U.S. destinations, more travelers are exploring affordable and diverse locations in Latin America. Chile offers a unique blend of sustainability, affordability, and cultural experiences.

Overwhelming Information: Simplified Planning

WBQA understands that organizing a trip to a championship on the other side of the world can be daunting. To mitigate this, we have created a comprehensive guide in collaboration with ACA, the Chilean national WBQA association. This guide minimizes the hassle for both event organizers and participating teams. You can find the guide here: [Chile’s Championship Guide](link).

Fixed Mindset: What Can I Learn About BBQ?

Different Culinary Traditions

In Latin America, barbecue is a social event where meats are grilled over an open flame using wood or charcoal. This contrasts with European BBQ styles, which vary widely and include grilled, smoked, or slow-cooked dishes. The diverse culinary traditions across Latin America offer unique insights that can enrich your own barbecue techniques.

Meat Expertise

Meat consumption is significant in both regions. In Latin America, beef is particularly popular in Argentina and Uruguay, while Brazil leads in chicken consumption. The frequent consumption of these meats has naturally refined their cooking processes, offering valuable knowledge for European teams.

Championship Rankings

While European teams currently hold the Grand Champion and category winner titles, it’s essential to understand the parameters that determine these champions. Winning teams must comprehend the rules and regulations thoroughly. A lower ranking might indicate that European teams have a better grasp of what is required. Additionally, the judges, who are predominantly from the host region, play a crucial role in determining the winners. For instance, at the last Intercontinental Championship in Costa Rica, most judges were from Latin America, and unsurprisingly, Latin American teams took the top positions.

Global Arrogance

The perception of arrogance between Europeans and Latin Americans is rooted in historical and cultural dynamics. The term “global arrogance” describes the cultural and economic hegemony of Western countries over other regions. This arrogance can manifest as a lack of understanding or appreciation for the unique cultural and historical contexts of Latin America.

Encouragement for European Teams

By addressing these inhibitors, WBQA aims to encourage European teams to participate in the Intercontinental Championship in Chile. The warmth and hospitality you’ll experience in Chile, along with the lifelong friendships you’ll form, make this an opportunity not to be missed.

Join us in Chile and embrace the unique cultural and historical contexts of Latin America while enhancing your barbecue skills!
